I owe my talented friends, all highly respected artists, my thanks and my best efforts, in presenting their work. They gave to me what I knew they would - the splendid quality of their abilities, plus the maturity and good taste to interact freely and successfully in the studio.

Liner notes:

Rhapsodic Echoes – a dialogue between piano & bass, w/great support from drummer John Yarling.

Promise Me – a simple theme, a nice framework for interactive soloing and rapport. Don Friedman is a remarkable sparring partner in this spontaneous form of Jazz play.

Minor Ballade – this simple chord progression opened up a world of beauty for me, one note at a time, the mood changes occur naturally. Don Friedman blurs the line between composition and improvisation in a masterful way.

Blues in the A.M. – a change of pace, a nice blues by Dave Hubbard, a giant talent and gentle soul with a superb jazz voice. Joined here by Mark Marineau on the piano.

Unscheduled Departures - a dedication to all those in the jazz world who left the party early. Such tremendous loss and heartbreak, we will miss them forever and treasure their recorded gifts.

Bertha Fay Bluz – introducing John Michalak, a young man with whom I’ve had the pleasure of working during the last six years. Like Dave, he’s in another world-class saxophonist with a lyrical voice & bright future.

For Pete’s Sake – dedicated to Pete Minger, the late great trumpet player, who shared his brilliance with us in the South Florida Jazz scene.

M.A.P.S. – an acronym for Mann, Ascher, Payne and Schwartzberg: about thirty years ago, we four were in the studio so often, for so many producers that Allan thought we needed a title. It’s a joke of course, but we share a lot of memories still. I packed my bass in the car and drove to NYC for a reunion and the great pleasure of including them in my debut CD; they also appear on track 5.

Almost Everything – the final performance from the trio session with Don Friedman. (3/10/00 – part of the “echoes” concept I had planned for these dates), and the title piece from Don’s Steeple Chase CD.

Uptown Brown – by Dave Hubbard, with Mark Marineau and John Yarling. Another nice blues.

Unscheduled Departures/Reprise – closure...with Mark, Dave, and John.

I came of age musically in 1950, standing in front of the Woody Herman and Stan Kenton bands at the old Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa Beach, CA. Hearing the music live for the first time was a breathtaking experience. As a music student I was blown away by the awesome power and magnificent sound of it all. The world of jazz unfolded for me. I wanted in and I wanted to play bass. The thank you list starts after a word from my sponsors…my heartfelt thanks to Barbara Norris Payne, my beautiful wife of 27 years who worked in the record industry in NYC. We married in 1974 and put together a beautiful home, in South Nyack, NY; the birthplace of our two beautiful children, Jesse, now 24, and her brother, Cory, 19, who were a joy to grow younger with as they grew older. Thanks to the late great alto saxophonist Joe Maini, who, in 1955, gave me the gig in his band backing Lenny Bruce at the Gaiety strip club in Hollywood. Thanks to Don Friedman, Billy Higgins, Don Cherry, and later Ornette Coleman, who made our young band the hippest thing around in 1957. Thanks to my mentor Percy Heath - for his vital guidance and help getting that band a record deal, and for his 45 years of friendship. Thanks to Ralph Sharon who gave me Tony Bennett and my dream move to NYC, many record dates and a growth cycle including Brazil in 1959. Thanks to Joe Beck. The Brecker Brothers, Herbie Mann, Jackie & Roy Kral, Stan Getz, Luis Bonfa, Ben Aronov, Mike Mainieri, Donald McDonald, Ton Jobim, Joáo & Astrud Gilberto, Sivuca, Hermeto, Tiao, Mike Abene and Steve Gadd. My thanks to David Lucas, who with his award winning jingles, gave me entry to a new career- studio work - and lots of it, for 25 years. Thanks to Don Sebesky, Sid Ramin, John Abbott, Tom Dawes, Sunday Productions, Kenny Ascher, Richard Druz, Gary McFarland, Roger Tallman, and all the others like Harry Chapin, Janis Ian, Steve Chapin, Emil Charlap, and Artie Kaplan, who gave me a chance to be creative and artistic in music other than jazz and a chance to contribute to the language of that music. Thanks to my mom and my family who filled me with hope. Thanks to Ray Brown & Percy Heath who in 1993 urged me back to a bass viol lifestyle. Thanks to The Jeff Taylor Group for a timely 2 years of chops control. Thanks to Patti Wicks- in whose trio I blossomed again. Thanks to Dave Hubbard, who I work with now, for his inspirational, huge talent. Thanks to my beautiful sweet voiced Tyrolean bass viol, older than sin, thanks to Tim Ravenna and again to Don Friedman and all the great musicians who made this CD a work of JAZZAZART.
